60 watt bulbs – Goodbye, old friend

It’s been a long, wonderful ride.  I will miss your simplicity.  There were no fancy electronics to worry about in this classic.  Just a couple of electrodes, a coily carbon filament, some inert gases, and a whole lot of love.  And they say dogs are a man’s best friend.  I respectfully offer the A-line standard 60 watt light bulb as our true best friend; loyal, trustworth, steady, and proven.  Sure it’s an big energy burner, but no one is perfect, right?

You might be asking yourselves, what’s happening with the 60 watt light bulb?  Well, as a result of recent legislation from the US government and the state of California (among others), the incandescent light bulb as we know it is on death row, scheduled for deletion from our cultural lexicon by 2012.  This allows us to turn our attention to energy sipping compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs.

Anyone who takes a look at the energy consumption levels for lighting products can see the benefits to moving into newer technology (our dear 60-watt bulb is based on technology from about 100 years ago).  Still, the passing of a legend such as this is certainly worth mentioning.
